Fulfill The Dream by Magdalena Wosinska

Fulfill the Dream is a documentary photobook by Polish photographer Magdalena Wosinska that captures the American skate culture of the ‘90s through color and black-and-white snapshots. The scene’s energy, creativity, and rebellious spirit influenced fashion, music and artistic expression, shaping a generation of American underground youth. The book features Chad Muska, Austyn Gillette, Jim Greco, Harold Hunter, Ed Templeton, Eric Ellington, Ali Boulala, and many other influential skaters.

Beyond the book’s broader examination of American skate subculture, Wosinska’s project is a deeply personal journey through her teenage years and an exploration of what it means to be a misfit in a world of misfits. She presents some of her first photographs, taken at the age of 14.

Craig Krull talk with Joshua Tree artist Ayin Es and Piñon Hills artist, Debbie McAfee

Contemporary abstract artist, Ayin Es was born and raised in Los Angeles. They identify as nonbinary or genderqueer. Known primarily for their unusual mixed media oil paintings and Artist's books, their work is considered raw and highly personal. At a glance, brightly colored surfaces suggest children's art, but upon deeper inspection there is evidence of abuse, disability, queer and transgender subject matter, family dynamics, and other thought-provoking themes. Widely collected, Ayin's imaginative artworks reside in museums such as the Getty, Brooklyn Museum, National Museum of Women in the Arts, Centre Pompidou, and more. A two-time recipient of ARC Grants from the Durfee Foundation, they've also won a Pollock-Krasner Fellowship, the Wynn Newhouse Award, an Artist Achievement Award from the National Arts & Disability Center, and the Bruce Geller Memorial Award from the American Jewish University. Their work has been reviewed in Artillery, LA Times, ArtNowLA, ArtScene, LA WEEKLY, ArtLTD, Art&Cake, and WhiteHot Magazine.

Born in San Luis Obispo and raised in Los Angeles, Debbie McAfee has a unique view of California that has influenced her art and life. Debbie attended California College of the Arts in Oakland, CA and received a BFA in film and photography.  She is a member of Los Angeles Art Association and has exhibited at Gallery 825 in West Hollywood and at ArtShare LA in the Los Angeles Arts District. Debbie fell in love with photography when she was gifted a Kodak Brownie Camera at age 6.  Around the same time she started sewing doll dresses on her mother’s Singer Featherweight sewing machine.  Her most current pieces are created from textiles and inspired by her own photography. In the past she has also worked in chalk pastel, oil paints and acrylic paint. She spends as much of her free time taking photos, sewing or knitting.  She currently splits her time between Boyle Heights, Los Angeles and Pinon Hills in the high desert just Northeast of Los Angeles.
